Anyone familiar with Provigil usage and/or abuse? by reaganite27 Q: I know many, many students choosing to abuse Provigil in order to "buy time" to study and work. Why has Provigil (modafinil) become the preferred "study buddy" drug instead of Adderall, Focalin, Concerta, etc?

A: Provigil is great for that purpose, but if you goto any school, Adderall is used more because it's better. The other ADD drugs are used here and there, but are not as popular.

I just started a drug called Provigil, but I can't afford it. Can you tell me how to apply for hardship case? by dude Q: I read that the company Cephalon will give you a supply for awhile for hardship cases. I need enough until I can get back to work.

A: If it is true what you say about hardship cases you could contact the corporate headquarters at: Cephalon Inc., 41 Moore Rd., P.O. Box 4011 Frazer PA, 19355 Tel: 610-344-0200 for information on how to apply. Good luck, good mental health, peace and Love!

I have been taking provigil for a couple of months? by JT289385 Q: the provigil is very expensive , I do not have insurance. I have heard I can get a genaric threw a india pharmacy ( modalert ) or (modavill) has anyone heard of this and if so does it work?

A: I have worked at a pharmacy for the last 8 years and have never heard of it. It could be a 'generic' available in India, just not here. I personally would never order medicine from overseas. It's too dangerous; the FDA does not regulate it so it could contain more or less of the active ingredient, which can pose serious problem. Unfortunately, I cannot think of an alternate to Provigil. I would talk to your doctor, since it only comes in brand name he may be able to give you samples. You could also see if the manufacturer (Cephalon) offers any kind of program that gives you discounts.

does any one know if you can take provigil for exessive sleepiness? by Kat (with wisdom under her hat) Q: I take alot of meds that can cause sleepiness but Ive had been this way for years when I wasnt on meds. I can fall asleep talking to someone, I get sleep paralasis, fall asleep sitting at a stop light, I can be dreaming and be awake.. and yet I have insomina bad with my fibro.. wondering if anyone knows if they will prescribe provigil to help be fuctionaly awake during the day time since I take othe meds that can also add to my sleepiness.

A: Some doctors will prescribe Provigil as an off label use for fibro. My NP does for me. I happen to love it. It's helped me quite a bit with not being sleepy during the day and oddly, has helped me need less medication at night for sleep issues. Now I just need my muscle relaxer purely for muscle relaxation, not the added benefit of it making me sleepy. Some insurance companies won't cover it for fibro though. That makes no sense to me but it is one of those more expensive meds that get argued about apparently.

What was found to be the cause of chest pain that some people experienced during Provigil clinlcal trials? by marian d Q:

Does anyone know what is good for Chronic fatigue Syndrome besides provigil? by misaac2007 Q:

A: Treatment Overview Treatment for chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) focuses on making you feel better so that you can resume a normal life. Simple measures you can take at home—such as improving your sleep habits and getting gentle exercise—are important parts of treatment. Talking with a counselor or psychologist has been proven to be helpful for people with CFS.6, 7 Although there is no cure for CFS, many of its symptoms do respond to treatment. Initial treatment Pain relievers that you can buy without a prescription, such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or aspirin, may help relieve headaches, muscle and joint pain, and other physical symptoms. Narcotic pain relievers, which require a prescription from a health professional, may become addictive if they are used frequently, so they are generally prescribed in the most severe cases on a short-term basis.

Provigil and Lexapro taken together, any pharmaceutical techs? by sweeteralsothanhunii Q: Im wondering if this is smart ? Seems to throw a loop into the fire, but both DRs say its fine. It dont feel fine. anyone know?

A: Well Lexapro is for depression and Provigil is for narcolepsy or chronic fatigue....Why does this seem to be a problem?Makes sense to me! I take Prozac and Provigil. If you are filling them at the same drug store the Pharmacy would know. As a lay person I would say no problem....but if the Dr's say it and the Drug store fills it...and I who happens to be a know it all....says it then its fine!! LOL... Sometimes DR over prescribe, but sometimes we really need it. I do need it and would not be able to function without my meds. I tell no one...(well except you guys) as friends have way to much to say..Friends and family just do not understand......Everyone is an expert out there. Listen this time to your doctor if you are feeling better. If you are not then tell them and maybe you need a different anti depressant...It takes time to get adjusted. Also Pharmacists are a wealth of information. I find good doctors in a new area by talking to the Pharmacists. I ask for the names of three Dr's from 3 Pharmacists and pick the name that keeps coming up. Hope you are feeling better ! Good Luck!!

What is the most effective medicine for narcolepsy? I have tried Provigil, but it did not work. Any suggestion by bpchlop Q: I have tried Provigil, but it did not work. Any suggestions? Thanks.

A: Provigil is the most effective, right now. Previously, they used Ritalin. You could ask to try that.

Where/How i cant to get online Antinarcoleptic products as Modalert/Provigil free Rx & US delivered? by John M Q: Rx-market.net offer the next - http://www.rx-market.net/med/Modalert.html. Where i can find cheapest prices for Modafinil legal purchasing ?

A: Is this a real question or just link spamming? I really would not recommend to start using any medicine on your own without professional medical attention. It may result in serious health problems or may be even death for some people.. If your doc has verified that this med is really safe for you you can save some money if you order meds online, just check the pharmacies very careful before you buy anything. Here are some tips from my experience with online drugstores. One thing I know for sure - do not buy anything from a pharmacy that sends spam emails, I know a few guys who been ripped that way, including myself. Also avoid pharmacies that have got well known SCAM products on their product lists (like p***s/breast enlargement pills, viagra for women and other questionable "products") It is a very big chance that their prescription meds are also fake. When you have found something that looks like a good and trusted pharmacy, check if the pharmacy has got a live support chat or a support phone number. If you have any doubts I suggest to contact the support staff before placing any orders, because if your shipping will be delayed or if there will be any other problems, it is better you have already tested the quality of support they can provide. Also ask the support what are their shipping and refund policies. http://www.half-price-pharmacy.net probably is one of the cheapest sites online. Have ordered a couple times, the meds work ok, just as the ones I can get at Wal Mart. It is from the UK and I feel much better ordering from a British pharmacy than a pharmacy from India or Mexico. Of course If I were taking a life saving chemical (heart medication, as example) I would want the branded product from my local pharmacy. If it is not life saving get the generic and save 50% or more.

does anyone know if Provigil can cause infertility? by magen.williams Q: My husband and I are trying to get pregnant and I am currently on Provigil. I was wondering if anybody experienced problems concieving while on this medicine.

A: Women who use hormonal birth control may have a higher chance for getting pregnant, while taking PROVIGIL, and for one month after stopping. Talk to your doctor about other birth control methods while taking PROVIGIL

Where can I buy Modafinil or Provigil? by Q: Thanks to massive layoffs and a crappy economy, I am both without a job and without health insurance. Awesome. I've been taking medication for narcolepsy for years. Has anyone out there ordered this medication online with success? This is vital to my functioning normally! I'd greatly appreciate any info you can give me. Thanks!!!

A: Hi Chelsea, Sorry to hear about the unfortunate turn of events for you. I found a really reputable online pharmacy (based in the UK) which sells Provigil (also known as Modalert or Modafinil). It's 3 or 4 times cheaper than all the other sites. I have done extensive research on this because my insurance company doesnt cover me. I bought it from there as well as some relatives who have narcolepsy. It's delivered within 5-7 days...here is the link:$93 dollars only for 100mg 100 tabs: http://www.goodhealthpharmacy.com/new/catalog/product_info.php?ref=40&products_id=619&affiliate_banner_id=1 Hope this helps you! Good luck!

if you are taking suboxone can you take provigil? by the wild child rock star Q: a friend of mine asked me to check it out for him and i said yahoo might know. provigil is for people who work swing shift and cant stay awake. he is a firemen and works crazy hours.

A: Yes, buprenorphine and modafinil (the active ingredients in the two meds) work completely differenty in the CNS. There are no drug interactions between the two

Has anyone been prescribed Provigil for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome? by Q: and can't sleep at all? I cannot vote yet but it is now called narcolepsy.

A: Provigil for CFS? That's really an off-label use. It's for excessive sleepiness in adults with sleep disorders, not CFS. My answer is no. I have CFS, but I would not take it if it was prescribed to me. I've learned after all these years having it that if my body is tired, it's because I need to rest, and not be kept awake by a drug. That sounds like Chinese water torture to me.

Does anyone take provigil? Does it work for you and how does it make you feel? by mcneelyins Q: My Dr has just prescribed it for me and I do not know what to expect with it?

A: I've been on it for several years now. It does nothing but help you stay awake. You won't be jittery or anything. It isn't a magic pill, though. You have to get sleep eventually!

What are some side effects of Provigil? by sweetestthing Q: I was prescribed Provigil today for chronic fatigue associated with my fibromyalgia diagnosis. I was wondering if any one could tell me what their experience with this medication was....good and bad.

A: I have fibromyalgia along with sleep apnea and several other ailments. I have been taking Provigil 200mg twice daily for approx. 5 months now and it has made a tremendous amount of difference in my my life. The main thing it does is stimulate the brain, your more alert, clearer thinking (no more brain fog). It is a stimulant but not like speed or even diet pills. Not that I have ever taken speed, this is info from my Doctor. You can actually take it and take a nap, I have done this several times. I have lost 20 lbs since starting on Provigil. I believe this is only because its given me more energy where I can actually get up and go now where as before I couldn't. I still have my share of bad days, that is just fact with fibro. Maybe your Doctor can give you samples to try as it is very expensive! It cost around $480.00 a month. Hope this helps. Good Luck to you!

Has anyone had a lose of appetite while taking provigil? by bbg23 Q: I have been taking provigil for 2 weeks and everything seems to be going fine except I have no appetite at all. Has anyone else experienced this symptom?

A: It is a CNS stimulant like speed, so that makes sense.

what is provigil fda approved to treat so i can get it covered by my insurance? by jessabelle Q: i'm looking up various drugs to treat ADD before i go in to see a doctor, and i heard this is a good mild one but is very expensive and most insurances don't cover it unless it's prescribed for the thing it's FDA approved to treat. So what is that thing?

A: It's given for Chronic Fatigue. I don't see how it would help with ADD? Maybe it does the opposite when taking it for ADD. But, because of my health I am chronically fatigued to where I can't stay awake for very long periods of time. Provigil makes me feel very alert and awake.

I was given a prescription for a medicine called Provigil which cost to much .Does anyone know of a substitut by mjthurston222 Q: Provigil in my case is being used to give me the ability to get up in the morning. Without this medicine i am in bed all day and night.

A: provigil does NOT come in a generic, it is very expensive. I also use a stimulant to help get up in the am. I use ritalin, some people do use adderal. I work in a pharmacy

How long does it take for provigil to leave the body? by cher Q:

A: Provigil has a fairly short half life in the body, but the drug tests can be calibrated to detect Provigil for up to several days after you take it.Provigil can be detected in your blood and urine, but a typical employment drug test does not include a screening for modafinil. This medicine is typically not something the drug tests are trying to pick up. Even if the test does include a screening for Provigil, the medicine is not illegal, so in the large majority of cases, there will be no negative consequences. Provigil is a prescription drug, not an illegal one.

Can Provigil give you high blood pressure? by crazypugmama Q: I was prescribed Provigil for excessive fatigue.

A: It is a prescription medicine, read the insert you get from the pharmacy. Most likely, anything that is a stimulant to the central nervous system will influence your blood pressure.

Has anyone added Wellbutrin or Provigil now that they're on Lexapro? by Dagdagan Q: I'm on Lexapro. Great for depression, but it has hurt my motivation at work and sex drive. I've heard that adding Wellbutrin and/or Provigil can help. Has anyone tried either of these along with an antidepressant? How did they work?

A: I am on Wellbutrin, Lexapro, and Lamictal. My sex drive was fine until I started the Lexapro. I'm not sure if adding Wellbutrin will help because Lexapro does of a high risk of decreasing the ability to have an orgasm. I talked to my Dr. and he told me I didn't need to take my Lexapro on the morning of sex. Yes, that means I have to plan it if I want to c**. And I can't want to have sex everyday so I'm not taking the Lexapro. Talk to your Dr. to see if this may be possible for you, maybe add Wellbutrin for back up. It may be embarrassing, but Dr.s really have heard it all. Good luck.

Does mind boosting drugs like Provigil or any other drug works? by Q: Does it work same as they have shown in some movie called "limitless" ?

A: Woe to you! for you build the tombs of the prophets whom your fathers killed. So you are witnesses and consent to the deeds of your fathers; for they killed them, and you build their tombs. Therefore also the Wisdom of God said, `I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and persecute,' that the blood of all the prophets, shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechari'ah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it shall be required of this generation. Woe to you lawyers! for you have taken away the key of knowledge; you did not enter yourselves, and you hindered those who were entering."

Can you drink coffee if you are on Provigil? by 007butterfly Q: Is it bad for your heart to have all the energy. I don't drink coffee for the energy, but because I like it. Decaff just isn't the same.

A: how are you? I know that's not what this forum is for but you don't have an email or a page on 360. Hi!

Have you taken or know any of the side affects of Provigil? by Cutie Q: i was searching for info on it online and people were saying it caused them to lose weight which would be totally awesome since i am on a diet already. My doctor just prescribed this medicine to me because i keep falling asleep at work and i'm worried about losing my job lol..... oh well guess i'll take it and see what happens.

A: The most common side effects are headache, nausea, runny nose, nervousness, dizziness, diarrhea, dry mouth, appetite loss, and sore throat. The less common side effects are depression, anxiety, extreme muscle weakness, often precipitated by laughter, vision problems, blood pressure change, neck pain, chills, vomiting, and a few more. Hope this helped! If you have any questions feel free to shot me out an e-mail.

Provigil, what website offer the lowest price? by qnh0262008 Q: I was prescribed Provigil #200, but I check with cvs it was too expensive, about $400 for 30 pill. Any one know a legimate website that off this for rock bottom discount price. Is there generic for provigil ?

A: lol, prescription wise, its EXTREMELY expensive.. I order mine from this website... bmpharmacy.com its under the anti-depressants and labeled modafinil....pretty cheap too.. pharmacyreviewer.com helped me find this website...

Does taking PROVIGIL improve ones short term memory? by phantomrat88 Q: I hear, see, or think something and forget what it was a minute later. Would this pill help me remember?

Are there any alternatives to Provigil? There's supposed to make a generic version but I have not seen any? by Professor Bradley Q: I have a relative that finds Provigil very useful. Unfortunately, it seems no insurance (she has BlueCross) will cover it. I've heard for many months that an alternative/generic will come out, but nobody seems to know. My cousin says Provigil is great for keeping her alert and focused. I guess everyone is upset that some affordable alternative doesn't come forth. Does anyone know about when it will become generic? She's tried ritalin and it didn't help. Thanks for your help!

A: Modalert is an overseas equevlant.

How long does Provigil(modafinil) show up on a drug test? by Q: I have to take a urine test and I'm wondering how long it can show up. NO PERSCRIPTION

A: No more than 2-4 days.

What is a normal dose of Provigil? by Rhymenoserus Q: I recently started taking the drug and have 200 mg per day at one time in the morning. Would I be better off splitting the pill in 2 and taking 1 in the morning and 1 in the afternoon, thanks.

A: Honestly I would suggest that since your MD wrote the prescription for you to have in the morning you should take it in the morning. If you want to change the way that you take the medication or want to break up the dosing schedule talk to your MD first. I take Provigil as needed for tiredness associated with sleep apnea and while I do not take it often at all I helps a lot when I do take it. Feel better soon and please check with your doctor or pharmacist prior to changing how often you should take the medication.

What are the long term effects of Provigil? by Q: My doctor prescribed me Provigil and I was wondering what-both neurological and physical-its long term side-effects are?

A: I LOVE PROVIGIL. I haven't noticed any long-term side effects, but I've only been on it a year and a half.

I would like to buy generic provigil or modafinil online without a prescription with my mastercard. Where? by Haley S Q: modafinil is the generic I think. I have a hard time staying awake.

A: Well, you can, but there's always a risk you'll be scammed. They know you won't go to the cops and complain about being ripped off when you were trying to buy medicine without a prescription. Provigil is Schedule IV which means it's a controlled substance in the US, though it's in the lowest class of controlled substances. This means it's also illegal to posses without a prescription. You could just go to your doctor and ask for it. Since it's not really a strong or addictive drug they shouldn't be too hesitant.

Is there a cheeper drug that is the same as provigil? by jj23 Q: Ive been prescribed provigil but it looks like my insurance is not going to cover it. and i cant pay 310.00 a month but it really helps. is it the only drug of its kind or is there something else.

A: No, Provigil is not generic yet. It's possible that you might use one of the drugs like Ritalin or Adderall that are available generically but that are less safe and that might not be useful for your particular condition. I.e., they aren't as good for sleeping disorders, but might be reasonable ADD alternatives.

Does anyone take Provigil or Modafinil to help them stay awake? by Nicole Q: I'm tired all the time, because of a chronic illness, so I'm thinking of asking my doctor for something along these lines, or maybe even getting it online without a prescription (is that legal?). I found some places that let you buy it. Has anyone taken this for these reasons, and what sort of side affects does it have?

A: Firstly Provigil is a schedule IV controlled substance under federal law, as is Nuvigil (armodafinil), a recently released, more potent drug like Provigil. As a result getting it online without a prescription is illegal. Even if you get it through a web site where a doctor writes a prescription, based on the answers you give to a few questions, it is still illegal. You actually need to see a doctor in person for a prescription to be legal. Most of those web sites will say it is legal to buy Provigil but I assure you it is not, don't be fooled. It is a good drug for many people and it is possible it might benefit you. Technically it is only approved for narcolepsy, sleep apnoea, and shift work sleep disorder however it is commonly prescribed off label to people with depression, to counteract sedation of opioids in people with chronic pain, for idiopathic hypersomnia, fibromyalgia, and hypersomnia due to a medical condition. It tends to work well in most people and is described as a "wake promoting agent", it has fewer side effects and risks than traditional stimulants like amphetamines and other "strong" stimulants. Common side effects include: headache, nausea, nervous, anxiety, agitation, insomnia, weight loss, and loss of appetite. However these are typically mild and often disappear after a few days. If your tiredness is severe it would be reasonable to ask your doctor about Provigil and any other options your doctor might feel are appropriate. It is certainly more favorable to use Provigil and more likely to be prescribed rather than amphetamines like Adderall and Dexedrine or methylphenidate (Ritalin). I have not personally taken it although I do have a sleeping disorder but I have scene several people respond very well to it.

Does Provigil show up on a drug screen? by Girly Girl Q: I have to take a drug test for work & am scared that Provigil will show up. What are the chances? Is it something they routinely check for? I do not have a prescription. Should I be worried?

A: Provigil (Modafinil) can be screened for and show up on "drug tests". HOWEVER, the routine drug tests that employers offer do NOT test for Provigil. Drug tests given to athletes will show Provigil because those tests are specifically looking for the drug (it's not illegal but it is banned for many professional athletes, such as Olympians). Although Provigil has similar effects as amphetamines (stimulants), it is actually chemically dissimilar and will not react the same with the test chemicals as amphetamines would. As such, mass spectroscopy and liquid chromatographic analysis (which are the 2 most common drug screens given by employers) would NOT show the presence of Provigil nor would Provigil cause a false-positive (amphetamine) on either test. In a nutshell, your test should be fine. The only industry that I personally know of (besides athletes) that tests for Provigil is the long haul trucking industry. And there, if you can show a valid prescription for the med, then you're fine.

Does Provigil get les effective after a time when used everyday? by 007butterfly Q: I suffer from extreme tiredness due to fibromyalgia and find this medication wonderful, but is wondering how long it will last? Any ideas? THANX

A: Some effects may lessen over the course of a week or two. Provigil, however, has been clinically shown to be effective over a 9 (or was it 12?) week period. It should remain effective(for on-label usage) for sometime after that, if not indefinitely(year and years).

How can I find a doctor that is willing to prescribe stimulant drugs such as provigil in CT? by mainewizzo Q: I am also curious as to why my family doctors office has a No Stimlant Prescription policy? They say because of how closely you have to follow the patient, but that sounds like bs to me as I've had health problems for years and am closely followed by them as I have been on tons of pain meds over the past few years. I wonder if most family physicians have similar policies and if I have to see a specialist(then which kind?).

A: He is 100% right. Do not get Stimulant medication from a physician who is not familiar with the study. Stimulants have a long list of side effects that are deadly, if not taken correctly. Go to a Doctor whose profession is ADD medication.

How do drugs (specifically Nuvigil/Provigil) that target the CNS work? by dublintoast Q: I take a drug for Narcolepsy, but I am told by my doctor that it is unclear how this medication actually works, just that it does. I'm having trouble locating information on CNS drugs, or drugs that target neurological symptoms. When I swallow a pill, what happens? My stomach breaks down the chemicals? How do the chemicals reach my brain? Is this something that goes through the blood stream and is transported to the brain through the spine? How? What is Elopsoism??

A: The drugs enter the brain and do work. it;s kinda like a septor but it doesnt last soluable time. Elopsoism is a great alternative. i'm sorry about your situatioin.

If you or your child take Provigil for narcolepsy, what have your results been? by Robbie G Q: My 14 year old was diagnosed with narcolepsy and she was prescribed Provigil which I have severe concerns about in terms of side effects. I want to talk to someone her age who actually takes it to find out what the effects have been.

A: I am an adult, but a 14 yr old is close enough to a grown person that side effects should not hinder your decision to have your child take a medicine, especially a perscribed one. It would be different if the child was under 10. Anyway, it works about 75% on me. It will not cure her, but it will darn sure give her a better quality of life. She will no longer be a zombie and will remember things more. She will still get sleepy at times, but way less. That is assuming it works for her. Also, give it two weeks. It causes headaches in some people at first but it goes away once your body gets used to it. It is worth it in the end to be at least somewhat normal.

Does Provigil cause fatigue for anyone taking it? by stater17552 Q: I was just recently diagnosed with narcolepsy and prescribed Provigil. I have only been taking it for 6 days and I have noticed that it makes me very tired, which is the opposite of what it should be doing. I am on 200mg and am hoping this is just a temporary side effect. Has anyone had similar experiences with Provigil? Will this go away?

A: Somnolence (sleepiness) is a known, reported, common side effect of modafinil.

what drug is compared to provigil besides modafinil? by mememe2 Q: I have recently been prescribed provigil, but my insurance will not cover it for some reason. It would cost me over $500 to pay for it alone, and I can not afford that. Any help on this matter would be appreciated. Thank you!

A: Check for other medicines less expensives. Try here: http://www.expodrugs.com/

Has anyone ever taken the drug PROVIGIL? And how did it work for you? by Kat Q: I have recently been prescribed this provigil and wonder if there are any side effects? How well it works, and if it works better over time. It is really espensive an I am low income so I have only taken 3 pills (one a day) and couldn't really tell a difference. Does anyone think they may know why. The only thin I can think of is that I also take "downers" like Soma and Zanax.

A: I had it prescribed for me and for the cost , I get the same support from a strong cup of coffee. It is a benign drug used when a doctor wants the appearance of treating your problems. Too expensive and ineffective. p.s. get a new doctor!!

Do you condone the use of Provigil (modafinil) to cram for the finals? by sk Q: I have read in several sources that this may actually assist in raising concentration and alertness? Have you taken it? Are there any notable side-effects that may outweigh the supposed "benefits"? Thanks

A: No. I would recommend a good nights sleep, a good diet, and half a clue.

How helpful is provigil if I am constantly tired? by Jay bird Q: I work 12 hours shifts, have a weekend job, and go to school full time. I always want to take a nap and have found myself nodding off at the wheel. I usually hate medicine, but everyone is telling me that this is the way to go. Will it really help?

A: This medicine will definately help. I am not a medicine person at all and within the last two months i was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and i have been unable to stay awake longer than 4 hours at a time. I am an assistant principal at an elementary school so you can imagine the fear that i had of losing my career. My doctor prescribed me provigil and it has brought me back to my former self. When i take it in the morning it lasts most of the day. sometimes i take half of a pill around noon. you will have to find what works for you but it is great. I do not feel that i am on any medication when i take it. I just feel normal. It is definately worth a try!

How long does it normally take to be able to tell a difference after being on cpap machine?what about provigil by Becca#9 Q: Anyone experience major side effects with Provigil and how long does it take to start working?

A: I don't administer medication that can't be inhaled, therefore I'm unfamiliar with provigil. However, I do work with cpap machines and patients that use them on a daily basis. Depending on your ability to adapt, you will start to notice improved sleep/wake cycles within a week and by a month you should have an excess of energy compared to your 'pre' cpap experience. If you are having trouble getting used to the machine. I recommend doing desensitisation exercises. Put the mask on in the early evening while watching T.V. for an hour or two. This way you get use to the feel of the mask and it becomes second nature to wear it. You may also ask your doctor to prescribe a light sleeper for a few days to help get you over the first week and off set the anxiety that some people experience when starting using cpap. Others have reported that a small fan blowing help to give the feeling of extra air. Which ever one you choose I wish you great success. My husband has been wearing his for over 8 years now and I can honestly say that its saved our marriage.

What are some alternatives to Provigil? by ɳōŕŧhëƦǹ ƪîgħʈs Q: I have been taking Provigil for two years now, and I've done very, very well on it. However, my new insurance company refuses to pay for it. I can't afford to pay 500$ a month out of pocket. What are some alternative medications that work similarly? I need something that increases wakefulness and improves concentration. I have excessive fatigue due to other medical conditions. Any help would be awesome. Thank you!

A: There are other options but for the most part they are significantly different and they may not be appropriate and your doctor may not be willing to prescribe them. No matter what talk with your doctor about what would be best for you. Also just so you know Provigil is expected to go generic in 2012 but it could be longer. Here is a list of stimulants that are potential options: Nuvigil (armodafinil)- this has just recently been put on the market. It is basically "upgraded Provigil" (you can see how similar the names are). This is almost certainly equally as effective as Provigil but possibly better. Actually Nuvigil is significantly cheaper than Provigil, in The US you can try it for 7 days for free, and you can get a $50.00 discount card for each of the next prescriptions for 12 months. However obviously the discount will run out. The estimating pricing before discounts is: 50 mg (30 ea): $99.99 150 mg (30 ea): $304.97 250 mg (30 ea): $304.97 The other drugs are much different, these are amphetamines, the most powerful type of stimulant. Most people who take these drugs take it for ADHD but amphetamines are FDA approved for narcolepsy and it is not uncommon for any of these drugs to be used for treatment resistant depression, hypersomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), and they sometimes used in people with chronic pain. Unlike Provigil or Nuvigil amphetamines tend to not only help people stay awake but they have more cognitive effects which is why they are good for ADHD. Also these drugs are more addictive, in The US they are schedule II drugs (the highest level for legal medications) where as Provigil and Nuvigil are schedule IV (in most countries Provigil and Nuvigil are not controlled substances). Listed are four medications, from the cheapest to most expensive. They are all generic and the last two are extended-release drugs (much more expensive). Dexedrine (dextroamphetamine)- 10-20$ USD/month Adderall (amphetamine/dextroamphetamine) Dexedrine Spansules (dextroamphetamine ER) Adderall XR (amphetamine/dextroamphetamine ER) These two drugs are similar to the others but they are both only brand name, they are VERY expensive, and the four above are most likely a much better option. Desoxyn (dextromethamphetamine) Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine) The last group are the methylphenidate drugs. Basically we are talking about the various formulations of Ritalin. Part of the reason Ritalin was made is because doctors wanted a drug that would treat ADHD but had less stimulating aspects so amphetamines are almost always the preferred option because they are much better at keeping people awake, alert, and focused. This is ranked from cheapest to most expensive, the two most expensive are not generic but the rest are. Ritalin (methylphenidate) Focalin (dexmethylphenidate) Ritalin LA (methylphenidate)- longer acting formation Ritalin SR (methylphenidate)- longer acting formation Focalin XR (dexmethylphenidate)- longer acting formation Concerta (methylphenidate)- longer acting formation Daytrana (methylphenidate transdermal system)- longer acting formation

Has anyone ever been prescribed an anti-depressant with Provigil? by supacutelover Q: I have been taking effexor (75mg) for about 4 months for depression and anxiety. I also take Provigil for Narcolepsy, i have only been on this medication for a week. Has anyone experienced any side effects whilst taking the two together? What side effects has anyone had from either medication?

A: It doesn't seem like these 2 drugs are known to have major interactions with each other, but there are a number of drugs that do interact with each of them. There is a site that lists many of the side effects noted for both prescriptions, what drugs have been known to interact with them, and when it may be helpful to contact a healthcare provider. Info. on Effexor http://www.drugdigest.org/DD/DVH/Uses/0,3915,700|Effexor,00.html Info. on Provigil http://www.drugdigest.org/DD/DVH/Uses/0,3915,550410|Provigil,00.html Most common side effects associated with Effexor aka venlafaxine include -headache -high blood pressure -vision changes Most common side effects reported with Provigil aka modafinil include -nervousness/anxiety -headache -trouble sleeping -nausea **btw, I have actually been on Effexor myself. All I remember is that for a while all was well, then I started to get extreme spells of fatigue too. It seems like the 3 of us have fatigue spells. Perhaps double check with your provider that the fatigue is not from a side effect of the Effexor? It's not common, but possible and may help cut down from unnecessary meds!

How do I handle my nausea without giving up Provigil? by wvugal82 Q: I have been taking Wellbutrin and Provigil for over a month and a half now. And although I am learning how to avoid getting nausea for the most part sometimes I get no warning before it occurs. I can't stand my body being this unpredictable but as a Narcoleptic will not give up the provigil as stimulants are my only other alternative. What can I do?

A: Have you considered that anxiety may be causing your nausea? I haven't taken antinausea meds or didn't ever really give a thought that they existed. But I have overcome my nausea naturally I guess.

Is it safe to take Provigil if you have high blood pressure? by danman4472 Q: I have high blood pressure and take Toprol for it. My doctor is concerned about the possibility of Provigil causing heart palpatations. Is it safe to take Provigil if you have high blood pressure? I'm going to get a sleep study done soon. Even if I come out negative for sleep apnea, could I still benefit from taking Provigil?

A: No it is not safe, for high blood at least I don't prescribe my patients because it causes toxicity of liver, it is claimed to relieve sleep apnea, followings are the side effects: Cardiovascular System In clinical studies of Provigil, signs and symptoms including chest pain, palpitations, dyspnea and transient ischemic T-wave changes on ECG were observed in three subjects in association with mitral valve prolapse or left ventricular hypertrophy. It is recommended that Provigil tablets not be used in patients with a history of left ventricular hypertrophy or in patients with mitral valve prolapse who have experienced the mitral valve prolapse syndrome when previously receiving CNS stimulants. Such signs may include but are not limited to ischemic ECG changes, chest pain, or arrhythmia. Modafinil has not been evaluated or used to any appreciable extent in patients with a recent history of myocardial infarction or unstable angina, and such patients should be treated with caution. Blood pressure monitoring in short-term (<3 months) controlled trials showed no clinically significant changes in mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure in patients receiving Provigil as compared to placebo. However, a retrospective analysis of the use of antihypertensive medication in these studies showed that a greater proportion of patients on Provigil required new or increased use of antihypertensive medications (2.4%) compared to patients on placebo (0.7%). The differential use was slightly larger when only studies in OSAHS were included, with 3.4% of patients on Provigil and 1.1% of patients on placebo requiring such alterations in the use of antihypertensive medication. Increased monitoring of blood pressure may be appropriate in patients on Provigil. NOW IT'S UPTO YOU.
